Chien-Ming Wang arrived in the Nationals’ clubhouse today from his latest rehab stint, which presumably means he’ll be coming off the disabled list shortly. Wang started yesterday at Class AA Harrisburg, allowing six earned runs in only two innings, so he will not be available to pitch for several days.
Wang has struggled in his most recent rehab appearances, posting an 8.23 ERA over 35 innings in seven starts. One scout who watched him said Wang has not been able to get his sinker down in the zone, leading to hard-hit balls.
Still, Wang has a major league track record, and there is no reason not to put him in the bullpen in case of emergency. The Nationals are on the hook for the remainder of his $4 million salary, anyway, and he could be used if the Nationals need an arm in a blowout or if they run out of pitchers. If Wang’s sinker suddenly returns, it’s a bonus. Â
