Due to the inclement weather, Tuesday night’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers is postponed until Wednesday. The teams will play a single-admission doubleheader, the first game scheduled for 4:05 p.m. and the second to follow 30 minutes after the end of the first or at 7:05 p.m., whichever is later.
Nationals Manager Davey Johnson said Tuesday’s starter Jordan Zimmermann (10-8, 3.01) is scheduled to take the mound in the afternoon game and regularly-scheduled Wednesday starter John Lannan (3-0, 2.41 ERA) will pitch the night game.
Because no more off day remain over the final two weeks of the season, Johnson will use a starter for Sunday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers to keep the starting rotation on regular rest. Johnson said left-handed starter Zach Duke, right-handed starter Chien-Ming Wang or long reliever Craig Stammen, a former starter, are candidates to start Sunday.
The Brewers are a right-handed heavy lineup and Wang and Stammen seem like more likely options. Wang, whose season was derailed by injury and ineffectiveness, last started a game for the Nationals on June 19. Stammen, who has had 10 appearances longer than two innings this season, last started a game in 2010. Zimmermann would be next scheduled to pitch on Sunday but on only three days rest.
“I just don’t want any of my good, young pitchers to [come back] on short rest at this point,” Johnson said. “And I don’t think [Zimmermann] has done it and he’s had a little bit of that [shoulder] inflammation there. I think he could do it, and have no problem, but it’s not something I’d like to do to any of those in the rotation, at this point.”
Then, Johnson quipped: “I’m sure [Stephen Strasburg] would volunteer. He is right-handed. He has been chompin’.”
The team announced that all tickets to Tuesday’s game must be exchanged at the Nationals Park box office for Wednesday’s doubleheader or for a later game, excluding Sept. 22 or a potential regular season tiebreaker game at home. Tickets to Wednesday night’s game will allow entry into both games of the doubleheader.
