The Braves beat the New York Mets, 6-2, this afternoon in Atlanta, putting the onus on the Nationals to in St. Louis for them to clinch the National League East today. With the Nationals trailing 9-4 in the sixth inning after Ross Detwiler allowed seven runs in 2 1/3 innings, the chance of heading back to Washington with one more victory needed to claim first place appears strong.

If the Nationals cannot strike back, they would send John Lannan, the left-hander relegated all season to Class AAA, to the mound looking to clinch Washington’s first first-place finish since 1933. The Nationals begin a three-game, season-ending series against the Phillies tomorrow.
