Rafael Soriano waiting on visa issue (updated)

Rafael SorianoCloser Rafael Soriano has not arrived at Nationals camp because of a visa issue and hopes to report by the end of the week, according to a person close to him.

Soriano has been held up as the Dominican Republic verifies information related to his visa. Soriano received a five-year visa when he signed with the New York Yankees prior to the 2011 season. The transfer of that paperwork to the Nationals has led to the delay, according to the person.

“He’s ready to roll, can’t wait to report to camp,” the person close to him said.

Update, 1:40 p.m.

A spokesman confirmed Soriano has a visa issue and will arrive “soon,” but the Nationals are not certain when. The schedule is “day-to-day,” the spokesman said.

Manager Davey Johnson shrugged off Soriano’s delay, confident the 33-year-old will know how best to prepare for the spring.

“I’m not worried about him because he’s a veteran player who knows what he needs to do to get ready,” Johnson said. “He’s got good weather down there. I’m sure he’s not just sitting watching TV. That’s the least of my worries.”
