Jayson Werth wasn’t in Tuesday’s lineup against the Tigers, the day he was expected to return after missing the entire series in Pittsburgh, because of the wet field conditions. Manager Davey Johnson said Werth is expected to return Wednesday.

Werth last played on Thursday in Atlanta, after missing two games with a sore left ankle from a foul ball and a tight hamstring. He left that game after the fifth inning when the hamstring flared up again. Werth’s doctor examined his hamstring, Johnson said, and reiterated that the outfielder’s leg muscle wasn’t pulled.

“[Werth] feels pretty good about that,” Johnson said. “His hamstring feels pretty good.”

If the weather hadn’t been poor on Tuesday, Johnson said Werth would have been in that day’s lineup, even though he is 5 for 30 career against Tigers starter Anibal Sanchez.

“I’m awfully cautious with running a guy out there with a hamstring and re-injuring the hamstring,” Johnson said.
