Bryce Harper will miss tonight’s game against the Padres and possibly tomorrow with bruising and swelling in his left knee, one of several lingering effects from his violent collision with the right field wall at Dodger Stadium on Monday in Los Angeles. Harper, who missed games Tuesday and Wednesday, may try to play tomorrow. He may return Monday in San Francisco.
“My knee is barking a little bit today,” Harper said. “Take today and tomorrow, or if I feel good tomorrow, I’ll be in there. Just trying to get ready for San Fran, see what happens.”
Harper “has got bruises everywhere,” Manager Davey Johnson said. After Thursday night’s game, Harper limped through the clubhouse. On Friday afternoon, he underwent an MRI on his bruised abdomen, and the tests revealed no structural damage.
“That was good peace of mind to hear,” Harper said. “Everything else feels pretty good. I’m not going to chance it. I’ll get treatment and see if I can go tomorrow.”
The day after Harper hit the wall, he mentioned he felt nausea. Both he and the Nationals say he did not suffer a concussion. Today, Harper said he had felt no nausea since Tuesday.
“I feel pretty good, head-wise,” Harper said. “It’s just my knee.”
“Everybody thinks they’re doctors, and everybody thinks they know this, know that,” Harper added. “The Nationals did everything, my trainers did everything. I saw two doctors in L.A. two days in a row. My trainers did everything to protocol. I feel better, and my head feels fine.”
In the two games since he returned, Harper has gone 2 for 8 with a walk and a mammoth, 431-foot homer into the shrubs beyond the center field fence at Petco Park.
