Following their 6-4 victory Friday night over the Mets, the Nationals optioned first baseman Chris Marrero back to Class AAA Syracuse in order to make room on the roster for Class AA Harrisburg right-hander Taylor Jordan, who will make his major league debut Saturday afternoon.
The Nationals called up Marrero June 9 to replace the struggling Tyler Moore as a right-handed power bat off the bench. Moore has now come back, and Marrero, who showed promise early in the year at Syracuse, has done little to stick in the majors. In limited playing time, Marrero went 2 for 16 with one RBI and no extra-base hits.
“It’s a tough situation for a young player who’s having a heck of a year and have to take his spot for the roster,” Johnson said. “Told him keep his head up and keep having a great year.”
Jordan will become the 10th pitcher to be drafted by the Nationals and make a start for them since they came to Washington in 2005. If you want to win some bar bets, here is the full list, in order:
