As authorities worked to contain a gunman outside a courthouse near the Nationals’ spring training facility, a team spokeswoman said Space Coast Stadium is secure and all players and personnel inside are safe.
At around 10 a.m., according to Florida Today, police received a call about a man with a gun outside Moore Justice Center, located less than a mile from Space Coast Stadium. Officials placed both the courthouse and Viera High School, which is essentially across the street from the ballpark, on lockdown.
Brevard County sheriff’s deputies surrounded the gunman, and a department spokeswoman told Florida Today the situation is “contained.”
The Nationals are opening their spring training schedule today against the Mets in Port St. Lucie. But many players, coaches and other personnel remained in Viera for a workout inside Space Coast Stadium.
“The stadium is secure, and everyone inside is safe,” a Nationals spokeswoman said. “All our gates are secure, and players who did not travel are either on the field or in the clubhouse. We’ll continue to monitor the situation.”
