Bryce Harper out of Nationals’ lineup, will see hand specialist

After he injured his hand sliding into third base Friday night, left fielder Bryce Harper is out of the Nationals’ lineup Saturday morning with a sore, swollen left thumb and will visit a hand specialist in the early morning, Manager Matt Williams said. Still, Harper could be available off the bench Saturday against the Padres, and the Nationals do not anticipate he will miss more than a game or two.

“The early tests, anyway, are pretty good,” Williams said. “X-rays are negative. There’s some swelling there. We just want to make sure we knock it out.”

Harper hurt his thumb when he smashed a three-run triple in the third inning. He slid headfirst into third base and seemed to jam to his left thumb. Harper remained in the game for an inning in left field, but he exited in the fourth inning. Both Harper and Williams said Harper could have kept playing, but with the Nationals routing the Padres they did not want to risk further hurting his thumb.

Kevin Frandsen will replace Harper in left field. Williams chose Frandsen over Nate McLouth, even though the Padres are starting a right-hander in Andrew Cashner. Williams spoke with reporters before the lineup had been made available, so he didn’t get a chance to explain that one.
