Today’s Game 2 Nationals-Cubs lineups

Even though Manager Matt Williams wanted to rest Ian Desmond for one game of the doubleheader, the shortstop is in the lineup for the second game. Williams said he wanted to check with Desmond after Game 1 and knew he would have a hard time sitting him because he is 8 for 16 lifetime against Cubs starter Jeff  Samardzija.

Jayson Werth, who rested the first game, is in the starting lineup in the second game. Wilson Ramos, who also rested in the afternoon, is in the lineup catching Blake Treinen, who is making the spot start. Denard Span is resting after starting the first game and Nate McLouth is playing two games.

The biggest revelation about Game 2′s lineup is Kevin Frandsen starting at second base again. Before Saturday, Danny Espinosa started 25 of the previous 27 games at second base. He will now not start both games of the doubleheader. Espinosa is hitting .219 and 0 for his past 17. Perhaps Williams is dropping a hint about what may come when Bryce Harper returns.
