Tonight’s Nationals-Phillies lineups

Ian Desmond wanted to talk his way into the Nationals lineup, which is a good sign for his long-term prognosis. But Manager Matt Williams sat him a day after a fastball drilled the base of his right hand, forcing him to leave in the eighth inning. Danny Espinosa will take his place at shortstop.

Jayson Werth fouled a ball off his left foot in the ninth inning and was hobbled afterward, but he’ll tough it out through some soreness.

For the Phillies, recently signed Grady Sizemore will make his Phillies debut batting leadoff and playing center field.
