Today’s Nationals-Reds lineups

A day after switch-hitting Zach Walters started at second base against a right-hander, Kevin Frandsen is starting at second base against right-hander Johnny Cueto. It would seem like a curious match-up — starting a right-hander against a right-hander instead of playing Walters again — but Manager Matt Williams said he chose Frandsen because of his experience against Cueto.

Frandsen is 2 for 7 against Cueto in his career, which isn’t many at-bats. Walters, a rookie, has never faced Cueto but provides power from the left side and handled himself well on Friday night in his first start at second base. Williams said he also wanted to get Frandsen playing time. Frandsen hasn’t started since July 10 and has 12 at-bats this month.

“He has at-bats against Cueto,” Williams said. “Being familiar and hadn’t had a start in a while. Had some pinch-hit appearances. A guy that’s familiar.”

Denard Span is on fire: He is hitting .387 (29 for 75) in July with a .446 on-base percentage. He has back-to-back four-hit games. His season slash line is up to .289/.339/.398.
