As expected, the Nationals optioned right-hander Blake Treinen to Class AAA Syracuse in order to clear space for left-handed reliever Matt Thornton, whom the Nationals acquired off waivers Tuesday from the Yankees.

Manager Matt Williams will give Asdrubal Cabrera his first day off with the Nationals to start Danny Espinosa against Mets left-handed starter Jon Niese. Espinosa is hitting .309 with a .878 OPS against left-handed starters this season. Against Niese, he’s 5 for 12 with a double.
