UPDATE, 5:59 p.m.: Jayson Werth was scratched from the lineup about an hour before the game. Bryce Harper is shifting over to right field and Kevin Frandsen is starting in left field.

Werth missed Friday’s game with a nagging ankle and shoulder injury, both which he has played with for at least week. Manager Matt Williams was hoping Werth would need only one game off and he put Werth’s name in Saturday’s original lineup.

“He’s getting work done right now,” Williams said before the game when he met with reporters. “He’s going to go swing. As far as I know, he’s okay.”

The Nationals didn’t announce a reason why Werth was scratched from the lineup, but it is presumably because of Werth’s lingering ailments. Williams said on Friday that Werth was “pretty banged up,” a lot of playing time also a factor.

Werth sprained his right ankle on July 28 and missed only one game because of it. Williams said Werth’s right shoulder was hurt when he hit the wall making a catch in Washington.

“It’s been sore on occasion,” Williams said. “If he takes a funky swing or swings at a bad ball where he’s really got to extend, then it gets sore again. He’s been playing with it for a week and a half or so, and playing pretty well, too.”

Williams said Steven Souza Jr., who left Friday’s game after slamming into the right field was, is available off the bench.
