Best way to endure a traffic jam? Deliver a baby

Realizing one of the top fear of pregnant women everywhere, a new mother delivered a baby this morning in a traffic-jam in Northeast Washington.

Yes, delivered her own baby. In a traffic jam.

According to my colleague Justin Jouvenal, “The woman was caught in a crawl near the intersection of New York and Florida avenues around 6:30 a.m.” when she went into heavy labor.

Accounts differ on who called 911. According to CNN, it was her father who was in the car with the 24-year-old new mother. Other accounts have her calling herself and a dispatcher talking her through the delivery. A fuller story is here.

The baby was born before emergency crews arrived. The unidentified mother and newborn were rushed to the hospital and are reportedly doing well.
