Get started: Congress nears deal to avoid shutdown, small business employment improves only slightly

Our daily blend of the latest news, trends and tips for the small business community.

What’s going ‘on’:

Congress nears deal to avoid shutdown: House and Senate lawmakers from both sides of the aisle have nearly settled on a short-term spending deal that would steer the government clear of a potential shutdown just before the election. Congressional aides suggested the deal could be announced as early as Tuesday.

Small business employment edges higher: Employment at small firms increased by a modest 0.17 percent (representing 35,000 new jobs) last month, but hours worked and average revenue continued to decline, according to the latest data from Intuit.

Keep an eye ‘on’:

Federal Reserve contemplating action: The Federal Reserve appears to be leaning toward taking new action to stimulate hiring and kickstart the yet sluggish economic recovery; however, some economists say the move won’t necessarily come immediately after this week’s meeting.
