Get started: Economy falls short on job creation, small businesses not helping

What’s going ‘on’:

Small business hiring remains sluggish:American small business payrolls remained virtualy unchanged in August, as overall employment dropped 0.05 workers per firm, according to a new report from the NFIB. On one bright note, the number of firms expecting to hire soon increased slightly while those cutting back remained unchanged.

Unemployment rate declines: However, the economy added only 96,000 jobs in August according to the latest report released Friday by the Labor Department. The decline in the jobless rate was also attributed to halted job searches, not jobs found.

Keep an eye ‘on’:

Government running more efficiently:The federal government saved $2 billion during the second quarter thanks to increased government efficiencies, according to the Office of Management and Budget, matching the savings realized during the first three months of 2012.
