What’s going ‘on’:

Small businesses swapping hands: New data from BizBuySell suggests businesses are changing hands more quickly, with the company reporting a 43 percent jump in business sales during the final three weeks of 2012 compared to the same period 2011.

Hiring and firing still common at small firms: Small businesses hired 3 million people in the second quarter of 2012, accounting for more than half of all hires, according to the Labor Department. However, they also accounted for more than half of all job losses.

Senators unveil immigration reform plan: A bipartisan group of eight senators outlined a proposal to reform the current immigration process — this includes creating a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants and increasing border security.

Do big businesses drive small business growth? A new Walmart in Los Angeles sparked fears that the big box retailer will wipe out local businesses, but some argue that those type of large firms actually help small, locally-owned companies when they open new locations.
