McDonnell, who recently stepped down as chief executive of DST Systems, Inc., a publicly-traded software development firm also based in Kansas City, will assume his new position on Jan. 1, 2013. He will succeed Carl Schramm, who served as president and chief executive between 2002 and 2011.

Janice Kreamer will replace McDonnell as chairman of the board. She has been a trustee since 2006 and was formerly the chief executive of the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation.
