If anyone has a perspective on our long and tortuous path to health care reform, it’s Stuart Altman, who has worked on the issue with five U.S. presidents — Democrats and Republicans. He has a new book out, “Power, Politics and Universal Health Care: The Inside Story of a Century-Long Battle,” which describes how Obama’s success fit into the history of the reform movement. Here, he chats with Betty Ann Bowser of the PBS NewsHour and offers some insights on Richard Nixon’s role, the possibility of a single-payer system, and on how his own mother’s health reflected on the state of the industry.
