When, if ever, will Congress raise the debt ceiling?

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner is preparing for a showdown over the national debt, which is forecast to hit the legal limit of $14.3 trillion by May 16. Geithner has said that “extraordinary measures” could help to conserve cash until August 2. After that date, the U.S. government would default.
