Recently, a group of Georgetown professors and administrators led by Father Tom Reese signed a letter taking strong issue with Rep. Paul Ryan’s budget when Ryan came to the Georgetown Public Policy Institute (GPPI) to give the Whittington Lecture. I should disclose here that I was one of the many signers of the letter and that I am a member of the GPPI faculty. I signed the letter not only because — this won’t surprise readers of my column — I agreed with its criticism of Ryan’s approach to budget issues but also because the letter welcomed Ryan to Georgetown. All universities, including Catholic universities, should be open to a wide range of views, and I’m glad Ryan came last week, even though I was out of town and could not attend his lecture.
But the point of this post is to call attention to a very helpful segment that Stephen Colbert did with Father Reese, whom many readers will know from his excellent contributions to On Faith, The Post’s religion blog. This segment summarizes as succinctly as anything I have seen the differences that many of us have with Ryan.
