Gabby Douglas, Churchillian

This year’s Olympics take place in London, scene of the Blitz, the Battle of Britain, and other moments in Their Finest Hour.

And so I couldn’t help noticing the following:

“But for everyone, surely, what we have gone through in this . . .  surely from this period of ten months this is the lesson: never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never — in nothing, great or small, large or petty — never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense.”

Winston Churchill, speech at Harrow School, October 29, 1941

“I hope I inspire people. My mom is telling me, ‘You can inspire a nation. So I always thought that about my motivation. And I wanted to always inspire people, because whether you’re having a hard time, just never give up and always keep fighting.”

Gabby Douglas, August 3, 2012
