Jim Lehrer, a moderator who will control the crowd

Everyone’s guessing about what will happen tonight at the presidential debate in Denver. Here’s a prediction about what will not occur: The raucous pro-Romney crowd that stacked the audience for January’s GOP presidential debate in Jacksonville will not be allowed a repeat performance tonight.

Jim Lehrer, host of PBS’s “NewsHour” and tonight’s presidential debate moderator, made that clear to me in a conversation a week ago. And his past performances as a debate moderator bear that out. Expect Lehrer to handle the audience respectfully but firmly. That goes for both Obama and Romney supporters.

Cross Lehrer, and they’ll be sorry.
