On gay marriage, Obama’s words finally match his deeds

In anticipation of President Obama’s historic declaration on same-sex marriage, I wrote earlier today that leadership is about doing what’s right when it is neither easy nor convenient. I noted that leadership on issues of civil rights is rarely easy or convenient, because it requires bringing people to a just destination when they are not quite ready to get there.

At 3 p.m., ABC News aired footage of the president of the United States saying, “I’ve been going through an evolution on this issue. I’ve always been adamant that gay and lesbian Americans should be treated fairly and equally. At a certain point, I just concluded that for me, personally, it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think that same-sex couples should be able to get married.”

With that, the words of the man who has done more than all of his predecessors combined to bring about equity and fairness to lesbians, gay men and their families, finally matched his considerable deeds.
