President George H. W. Bush, always humble

Our political culture is ugly. It slices and dices elected officials, particularly those in the presidential arena, like a voracious Cuisinart. Yet the profile of President George H. W. Bush on the “Today” show this morning, in acknowledgment of his 88th birthday, was a touching reminder of a long-ago time.

Sure, the profile was done by Jenna Bush Hager, a special correspondent for “Today” who also is the former president’s granddaughter. Still, what shines through is the 41st president’s humility, his awe at what he was able to achieve and his willingness to acknowledge defeat.

If you’re not moved in some way by what you see, you must be dead.
