Will the House allow a debt-ceiling increase that gets us past the 2012 election?

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s elegant little “disapproval” resolutions are looking more and more attractive as a plausible face-saver for the GOP zealots.  They did the best they could, they can tell the voters back home, but they’ll have to take their case to the public in the 2012 election if they want a broader mandate for change.  They won’t get that mandate (at least in my view), but seeking it is how democracy works. What we’re seeing today is the crazy consequences of a minority faction using any forcing device at hand to hold the country hostage.

Here’s hoping enough Republicans come to their senses quickly on the wisdom of fighting another day. It’s either that, the 14th amendment, or the abyss.
