Allen West: Obama’s economic policies are ‘destroying the black community’

President Obama’s economic policies are “destroying the black community,” Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) said Friday afternoon.

In a message on his Facebook page, West wrote:

As a Member of the Congressional Black Caucus and the House Small Business Committee, I am seriously concerned with the 13 percent unemployment number for Black Americans. The failed economic policies of President Obama are destroying the black community and lessening the chances for economic freedom while promoting economic dependence. Perhaps this is what the NAACP was afraid to hear me address.

The statement from the outspoken House GOP freshman comes on the heels of the Labor Department’s April unemployment report, which was released in the morning. The nation’s jobless rate fell to 8.1 percent in April, but the economy added only 115,000 jobs last month.

The report showed that the unemployment rate for African Americans stood at 13 percent in April, which West noted in his Facebook post.

But what West didn't mention is that the 13 percent figure is down from March, when black unemployment stood at 14 percent. And it’s significantly down from one year ago; the April 2011 unemployment rate among blacks was 16.2 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics report.

West’s mention of the NAACP in his Facebook post was a reference to the group’s move last month to revoke its invitation to the Florida congressman to serve as the keynote speaker at its annual fundraiser.

The NAACP said that it had uninvited West after the congressman said at an event that as many as 81 House Democrats are members of the Communist Party.
