Bella Santorum to be released from hospital in ‘couple of days,’ Rick Santorum says

Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum said Monday night that his daughter, Bella, has made a “miraculous” recovery and that she will be released from the hospital sometime this week.

“I just talked to my wife, and she’s on the mend and hopefully (will) be out of the hospital in a couple of days,” Santorum told Fox News Channel’s Bill O’Reilly Monday night. “So, we’re feeling very good about things.”

Bella, the GOP hopeful’s 3-year-old daughter, suffers from a fatal genetic disorder called Trisomy 18. On Saturday, she was hospitalized with a serious case of pneumonia, and Santorum canceled several weekend events in the key state of Florida to be with her – an episode that underscored the challenge for Santorum of running for president while caring for a daughter with a life-threatening illness.

Santorum noted in his interview with O’Reilly Monday night that until the weekend, he hadn’t been home since Christmas Day – and that Saturday marked “the first time in three years” that his daughter had been hospitalized.

“She is much better,” Santorum said. “Yesterday afternoon, she really made a turn and the chest x-rays dramatically improved. I just want to thank everybody for their prayers and their outpouring of support for Bella and for Karen and the family. And it worked. I mean, she had a very, very tough time of it on Saturday.”
