Bill Clinton was better than Obama at governing, Huckabee says

Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee (R) argued Sunday that Bill Clinton was a better president than President Obama “because he understands that in governing, you do have to sit down and work out your differences.”

“I think what is really hurting Barack Obama, he simply does not understand the dynamics of being the chief executive, because he has never had that position before,” Huckabee said in a roundtable on ABC’s “This Week.”

Huckabee, who appeared on a panel with conservative commentator Ann Coulter, former Obama environmental adviser Van Jones and former Pennsylvania governor Ed Rendell (D), praised Clinton as one of the country’s most “extraordinary” political minds – and also questioned whether Clinton was actually unaware of the expiration date of the Bush-era tax cuts, as he claimed in an interview last week after initially suggesting a short-term extension of the current rates.

At the same time, he argued that Clinton “can’t help his candor” and said that the former president made the case for a short-term extension because he believed that is the best course for the country.

“When he’s asked a question, he says what he honestly thinks,” Huckabee said, adding that Clinton’s candor gets him “in trouble with the Obama people.”

Rendell, who is on a book tour and has made headlines in recent weeks for contending that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton would have handled health care reform better than Obama has, contended Sunday that in the fall, Bill Clinton “will be the best spokesman, the best persuader, in the country.”

“And by saying nice things about Gov. Romney now ... he’s setting up his credibility with those undecided voters,” Rendell said. “Watch Bill Clinton in October.”

Huckabee also took aim at Obama for his “private sector is doing fine” comment, made at a news conference last week.

“I can see that in a loop in a commercial: ‘The private sector’s fine. The private sector’s fine.’ ... If the economy is still this bad in October, you’ll hear that statement over and over,” Huckabee predicted.
