Mitt Romney really loves lakes

TROY, Mich. – Mitt Romney is a lover of the water. He has one vacation home on a lake and another on an ocean, and he’s known to do some tricks on water skis. On Thursday, the Republican presidential candidate left little doubt about which kind of water he prefers.

“I love the lakes,” Romney declared at an afternoon rally here. “I love the Great Lakes. You know, we’ve been to Massachusetts. I love the ocean, too. I do love the ocean.”

But, an animated Romney continued, “There’s something special about lakes, where you don’t get salt on you after you’ve been swimming, where there’s no seaweed, where you don’t have to worry about things eating you in the water. I don’t worry about sharks, but somehow in the back of my mind, after seeing that movie ‘Jaws,’ it just makes you think.”

Romney was addressing a rally of about 200 supporters at the Polish American Cultural Center here in Troy, a few miles from the Detroit suburb where he grew up. He no longer lives in Michigan, but he has a beach home in the La Jolla section of San Diego and a lake home in Wolfeboro, N.H.

Romney’s wife, Ann, joined him on stage and also expressed her fondness for their native Michigan.

“This is a great place for us,” Ann Romney said. “I love also just putting up my hand and saying, ‘This is where my cottage was.’ I was a Manistee girl on Lake Michigan,” she added, referring to a quiet lakefront town where she spent time growing up.

Mitt Romney, meanwhile, spent summers at Lake Huron, specifically on Mackinac Island, where his father, George, had an official residence while he was governor.

“Mitt was a Lake Huron guy,” Ann Romney said. “So there you go. We have the competing lakes.”
