THE VILLAGES, Fla. -- For weeks on the campaign trail, Mitt Romney has been reciting verses from "America the Beautiful," which he calls his favorite patriotic hymn.<iframe frameborder=”0” scrolling=”no” marginheight=”0” marginwidth=”0” width=”454px” height=”255px” src=”http://specials.washingtonpost.com/mv/embed/?title=Mitt%20Romney%20sings%20’America%20the%20Beautiful’%20(00%3A56)&stillURL=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.washingtonpost.com%2Frf%2Fimage_606w%2F2010-2019%2FWashingtonPost%2F2012%2F01%2F31%2FNational-Politics%2FVideos%2F01312012-29v%2F01312012-29v.jpg&flvURL=%2Fmedia%2F2012%2F01%2F31%2F01312012-29v.m4v&width=454&height=255&autoStart=0&clickThru=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.washingtonpost.com%2Fpolitics%2Fmitt-romney-sings-america-the-beautiful-0056%2F2012%2F01%2F31%2FgIQABTnleQ_video.html”></iframe>
On Monday night at a rally here, Romney tried to one-up himself. He actually broke into song, belting out an entire verse of "America the Beautiful." The crowd of a few thousand snowbirds sang along with him.
It was a jubilant end to Romney's Florida campaign, as the former Massachusetts governor came here to The Villages, a sprawling retirement golf community in Central Florida that his campaign team considers one of Romney's strongholds.
Reporters could not recall another instance when a presidential candidate performed a song on the eve of an election.
After being introduced by a full roster of Florida elected officials, as well as his wife, Ann, and a young grandson, Parker, Romney delivered a brief stump speech in the town center. Supporters, some of whom had been in position most of the day to see him, swelled around the stage. A huge banner declared: "Florida Is Romney Country."
