Ohio, Rick Santorum and the fight for the middle class (Monday’s Trail Mix)

CANTON, Ohio — The Buckeye State is ground zero in the GOP presidential race today: former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney (R) and former senator Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) each hold three events here today, and we’ll be joining them on the trail.

With polls showing a race that could go down to the wire, one key group of voters could well be decisive: the middle class.

In today’s Trail Mix, we take a look at Santorum’s precipitous drop (and Romney’s rise) among Ohio’s middle class voters over the past few weeks.

Whether it’s due to some of Santorum’s more controversial comments on the trail or to voters breaking late for Romney as they have done in other states, the calculus is shifting quickly in Ohio. Will Santorum be able to get his mojo back?

Former House speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.), meanwhile, holds three events today in the Super Tuesday state of Tennessee, and Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) holds a trio of rallies in Idaho.

Here’s a closer look at today on the trail (Courtesy of candidate schedules and the PBS NewsHour Political Calendar; all times Eastern):
