Perry ad hits Santorum for ‘feeding at the earmark trough in Congress’

Need proof that Rick Santorum is surging in Iowa?

Look no further than Rick Perry’s latest radio ad.

In a 60-second spot released Thursday, Perry – the Texas governor whose GOP presidential bid has languished in recent months – takes aim at Santorum for his record on spending and earmarks during his 16 years on Capitol Hill.

“Santorum voted for the ‘Bridge to Nowhere’ and a highway bill full of pork,” the ad’s narrator says.

The spot also charges that Santorum “grabbed for a billion [dollars] in earmarks until voters kicked him out of office in a landslide.” And it includes a clip of Santorum stating that he’s “very proud of all the earmarks I’ve put in bills.”

“That’s right, Iowa. On taxes and spending, if Rick Santorum wins, you lose,” says the ad’s narrator.

Perry’s Iowa TV ads in recent days have been heavily focused on criticizing the congressional tenure of his rivals. But that his latest spot directly takes on Santorum – and includes only a brief clip of Perry at the end – is an indication that the former Pennsylvania senator has become the GOP presidential target-du-jour.
