Romney does Face the Nation, his first non-Fox Sunday show

at 08:02 PM ET, 06/13/2012

A full year into his presidential campaign, presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney will venture out of his Fox comfort zone this Sunday to make his first appearance on a rival network's political talk show.

Romney has been interviewed several times on ”Fox News Sunday” this campaign cycle, but has declined repeated invitations to appear on any of the other Sunday shows, occasionally drawing scorn from veteran anchors accustomed to interviewing presidential candidates.

One of those newsmen, Bob Schieffer of CBS News, finally will his chance this weekend, when Romney sits down with him on “Face the Nation.”

Announcing the interview on Wednesday night, Schieffer tweeted: “I'm looking forward to hitting the campaign trail and sitting down with @MittRomney for @FaceTheNation. Don't miss it!”

Romney will make the appearance from the campaign trail, as he will be on a six-state, five-day bus tour that looks to have him rambling through Ohio, a critical general election battleground, on Sunday.

Romney is not scheduled to appear on any other Sunday shows this week, according to a campaign aide. Unlike all of his Republican primary opponents, Romney has made no appearances on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” ABC’s “This Week” or CNN’s “State of the Union” in the 2012 campaign.

But Romney did sit down with “Fox News Sunday” anchor Chris Wallace several times, beginning last December in South Carolina.

A few weeks ago, Schieffer pressed a top Romney surrogate on the air about Romney’s reluctance to appear on other shows.

“You think we’re ever going to see [Romney] on one of these Sunday morning interview shows? I know he does Fox, but we’d love to have him some time, as would ‘Meet the Press’ and the ABC folk,” Schieffer said to Ed Gillespie, a senior adviser to Romney.

Gillespie replied that “we’ll have to consider a number of options, and I’m sure the morning shows are [some] of them.”
