Today on the trail: Romney, Santorum face off in Michigan

Need evidence that Rick Santorum and Mitt Romney are eyeing a Michigan win on Feb. 28? Look no further than today’s trail schedule.

The two GOP White House contenders spend their day in the Wolverine State: Romney starts off with a roundtable on fiscal issues in Monroe about 40 miles south of Detroit, then moves on to Farmington Hills and rounds out the day in Ohio.

Santorum addresses the Detroit Economic Club, and later addresses the Oakland County Republican Party Lincoln Day Dinner.

In 2008, Romney won Michigan with 39 percent to Sen. John McCain’s (R-Ariz.) 30 percent. He swept Oakland County – where Santorum will bring his campaign Thursday night – with 47 percent of the vote, a performance the former Massachusetts governor will likely have to repeat if he’s to succeed in this year’s primary.

Ron Paul, meanwhile, is holding his first campaign events of the week in Idaho and Washington state. And Newt Gingrich continues campaigning out west with events in California; tomorrow, he heads back to his home state of Georgia.
