Will Newt Gingrich abide by RNC rules? (Friday’s Trail Mix)
Newt Gingrich’s presidential campaign was battered this week by news that he was downsizing, charging for photos. and, possibly, losing his biggest backer. Now, the former House speaker is trying to figure a way around RNC rules that require a candidate to place first in at least five states during the primary process in order for that candidate’s name to be placed into nomination at the party convention.
Gingrich has won only two states so far — South Carolina and Georgia. But his campaign may seek to make the case that the rule refers to the delegate race, not the popular vote, and then try to win the backing of a plurality of delegates in at least five states before the convention convenes in August.
