A little SNL at the RNC

The leader of the House Band at the Republican National Convention will be a familiar face to fans of "Saturday Night Live." G.E. Smith was the musical director at SNL from 1985 to 1995, famous for his mugging and grimacing during guitar solos as the show went to commercial. Smith, who was previously the lead guitarist for pop duo Hall and Oates, is still a working musician, and runs his own small record label.

David A. Fahrenthold covers Congress for the Washington Post. He has been at the Post since 2000, and previously covered (in order) the D.C. police, New England, and the environment.
