Rove apologizes to Akin for ‘murdered’ joke

Republican strategist Karl Rove has apologized to Rep. Todd Akin, the GOP candidate for U.S. Senate in Missouri, for joking about the congressman being “found mysteriously murdered,” Bloomberg reported today.

We noted Friday that Bloomberg Businessweek had reported that Rove joked to a group of donors, “We should sink Todd Akin. If he’s found mysteriously murdered, don’t look for my whereabouts!”

Akin has been under pressure from Republican leaders to withdraw from the race against Sen. Claire McCaskill (D) following Akin's controversial comments about what he called "legitimate rape."

Bloomberg reports:

Rove called Akin yesterday to apologize in a phone call that lasted five or six minutes, and the congressman accepted and forgave Rove, Akin spokesman Ryan Hite said today.

“I believe it was an unfortunate choice of words,” Hite said in a telephone interview.
