Why Obama dialed it down

The president's campaign did extensive focus group testing and found that the low-key speech he gave Thursday night was wildly popular with voters, Howard Kurtz reports.

That wouldn't be so surprising. Obama's State of the Union this year was also considered dull by pundits but got good reviews from focus groups.
