President Obama is happy to own the term Obamacare.
Mitt Romney kicked of his catalog of the areas in which he would cut spending with the assertion that “Obamacare is on my list.” Then he immediately added, “I apologize Mr. President, I use that term with all respect.”
“I like it,” Obama replied with a smile. The moment underscored Obama’s strategy of trying to turn the term to his advantage. While opponents of the 2010 health-care law coined the phrase “Obamacare” to suggest that Obama was socializing health-care, the president now repeatedly uses the term in campaign speeches, adding, “I don’t mind it being called Obamacare because, it’s true, I do care.”
