Obama mocks his own debate performance

At a star-studded Los Angeles fundraiser Sunday night, President Obama poked fun at his own lackluster performance in last week's presidential debate.

"Everybody here are just incredible professionals," Obama told the crowd at the "30 Days to Victory Concert," where Jon Bon Jovi, Earth Wind and Fire, Jennifer Hudson, Katy Perry, and Stevie Wonder all performed. "They're such great friends and they just perform flawlessly night after night. I can't always say the same," he said.

At another fundraiser Sunday night, Obama joked that "there was some speculation" that failing to celebrate his 20th anniversary with his wife "had an impact on my performance.”

Obama reportedly did not think his first debate with Republican Mitt Romney had gone so badly until he reviewed tapes of himself the next day. In subsequent calls with advisers, he blamed himself. "The president is his harshest critic," senior strategist David Axelrod said on CBS' "Face the Nation" Sunday. "He’ll look at that tape and he’ll make the adjustments that he thinks are necessary."

A new Gallup poll suggests that the debate has helped Romney erase Obama's lead with registered voters.
