Mitt Romney met one of the former Navy SEALs killed in the attacks on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi last month, he revealed to a crowd at a campaign event in Iowa on Tuesday.
Glen Doherty was attending a Christmas party at the home of one of the Romneys’ neighbors in La Jolla, Calif. a couple of years ago. Mitt and Ann Romney had shown up at the wrong party, but before they realized they were at a private gathering instead of the neighborhood Christmas party, they met several guests, including Doherty.
“We had a lot of things in common,” Romney said of Doherty, who was from Massachusetts.
“He told me that he keeps going back to the Middle East. He cares very deeply about the people there. He served in the military there, went back from time to time to offer security services and so forth to people there. You can imagine how I felt when I found out that he was one of the two former Navy SEALS killed in Benghazi on September 11th.”
Romney did not realize Doherty was the same person he met at the party until a neighbor notified him in the past week, a campaign spokesman said.
“It touched me obviously that I recognized that this young man that I thought was so impressive has lost his life in the service of his fellow men and women, ” Romney told the crowd.
