Obama tonight virtually called for a new assault weapons ban, saying that weapons designed for soldiers don't belong on the streets, which is a reference to military style firearms that are now sold in gun stores and gun shows across America. The ban on assault weapons expired in 2004. Obama has not pushed for a reinstatement of the ban as president and his administration has steered very clear of the issue.
Romney is opposed to an assault weapons ban. President Obama also talked about Romney's attempts to court the National Rifle Association in his stances against gun control.
"Governor Romney was for an assault-weapons ban before he was against it," Obama said. "The reason he changed his mind was, in part, because he was seeking the endorsement of the National Rifle Association."
