Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill (D) beat Rep. Todd Akin (R) in a race that gained national notoriety thanks to the Republican challenger's comments on pregnancy and rape.

McCaskill was considered one of the most vulnerable Democrats up for reelection this year. But the social conservative Akin's primary victory -- followed by his controversial comments and refusal to drop out of the race -- helped McCaskill keep her seat despite Missouri's increasingly conservative leaning.
