Nikki Haley to announce Jim DeMint replacement today

December 17, 2012

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (R) will announce at noon today her choice to replace Sen. Jim DeMint (R).

The new senator will take over in January, when DeMint leaves to run the Heritage Foundation, and serve until the 2014 general election. Haley has said she would pick someone who intends to run in that election rather than a "placeholder."

Haley spokesman Rob Godfrey announced the governor's plans on Twitter.

The governor's short list of potential appointees includes Rep. Tim Scott (R) and Jenny Sanford, wife of former governor Mark Sanford.

Gov. Haley's political director, Kurt Pickhardt, tweeted this Monday ahead of the announcement:

If appointed, Scott would be the first African American to represent South Carolina — or any Southern state — in the Senate since Reconstruction,  and Sanford would be the state's first female senator.
