NRA asking for donations: ‘They want to burn your freedom to the ground’

While President Obama rallies his supporters, the National Rifle Association is rallying theirs.

"Whatever you can afford to give NRA-ILA right now, I need you to do it," Executive Director Chris Cox asks in an e-mail blast titled "They want to burn your freedom to the ground." The NRA Institute for Legislative Action is the gun advocacy group's lobbying arm.

"[T]he main goal of the gun banners in Congress is not to make schools safer, but to ban your guns and abolish every last sacred right you have under the Second Amendment..until they reduce your freedom to ashes," he writes. They need more funds, he says, to match Obama's "rich, gun-hating friends in Hollywood, along with anti-gun billionaire Michael Bloomberg."

There are 213 lawmakers in the 113th Congress who received money from the NRA. On the state and local level, the organization has proved formidable in thwarting new firearms regulations and expanding rights for gun owners.

Obama campaign manager Jim Messina sent out an e-mail Thursday morning, encouraging the president's backers to sign a petition endorsing his gun control agenda.
