Mass. special election date: June 25

The special election for the seat held by Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) has been scheduled, even though the senator has not been confirmed as secretary of state.

The Boston Globe reports that the primary will take place April 30 and the general June 25.

The full Senate will vote on Kerry's nomination Tuesday; there is no question that he will be confirmed. Gov. Deval Patrick (D) is expected to appoint a placeholder to fill Kerry's seat until the election.

Rep. Ed Markey (D) is the overwhelming favorite in the Democratic primary, but he might face a challenge from Rep. Stephen Lynch. On the Republican side, all eyes are on former senator Scott Brown, who has not yet made his plans known.
