Rep. Marsha Blackburn challenges Obama to skeet shooting contest

January 29, 2013

Rep. Marsha Blackburn is among those who aren't totally buying President Obama's claim in a recent interview that he often shoots skeet with guests at Camp David.

"If he is a skeet shooter, why have we not heard of this? Why have we not seen photos? Why has he not referenced it at any point in time as we have had this gun debate that is ongoing?" the Tennessee Republican asked CNN's Erin Burnett.

Obama revealed in a lengthy profile in the New Republic that he and guests at the presidential retreat "do skeet shooting all the time."

Blackburn told Burnett she is willing to give Obama a chance to prove his marksmanship credentials -- she'll even accompany him to the presidential retreat.

"I think he should invite me to Camp David, and I'll go skeet shooting with him."  Blackburn said. "I bet I'll beat him."

Another CNN journalist, Jessica Yellin, asked White House spokesman Jay Carney at his news briefing on Monday how often Obama went skeet shooting and why the hobby hadn't previously been mentioned.

Carney said he did not know how often the president went shooting but that there were no pictures because his time at Camp David is meant to "spend time with family and friends and relax, not to produce photographs."

Past presidents have taken advantage of the skeet shooting range at Camp David, and there are existing photos to prove it here on the About Camp David blog.
