Several e-mail accounts owned by members of the Bush family or their close friends have been hacked, a family spokesman confirms. A criminal investigation into the hack is underway, the spokesman said, declining to comment further.

The e-mails, posted by the Smoking Gun Web site, include a picture from former president George H.W. Bush's recent hospital stay and detailed exchanges among his children about his condition. Pictures of George W. Bush's family snapshots and oil paintings are included, including what appear to be self-portraits of the former president in a bathtub and shower. Bush took up painting in recent years; last week he released a portrait of his late dog, Barney.

There are also personal details such as e-mail addresses, phone numbers and mailing addresses for multiple members of the Bush family.

George W. Bush's sister, Dorothy Bush Koch, was among those hacked, along with family friends Williard Hemingway and Jim Nantz. The hacker identified himself to the Smoking Gun as Guccifer and said federal authorities have been investigating him for a long time.
